With the cooler temperatures, fall is an excellent time to get back into the garden to protect and prepare your plants for the upcoming winter. To control any insects or pests, here’s what you can do:

Treat houseplants with Systemic Granules and Safer Insect Killing Soap now to get rid of any insects before bringing them into the house before the first frost. Follow up with a second foliar application of soap in a week to ten days.

You should also check your lawn for grub activity. Increased activity of skunks, raccoons and moles as well as brown patches that peel back easily are indications of grub activity. Apply a insecticide with Dylox or use Beneficial Nematodes to control grubs.

Spray plants with Liquid Fence to prevent damage from deer.

Apply Fertilome Drench with Merit to trees and shrubs that are prone to insects like borers or that suffered from any infestation this past spring or summer. This will control any insect infestation and keep them from over-wintering on your plant.

Clean up your beds and gardens to avoid harboring insects and diseases over the winter.

Protecting Bulbs The Natural Way

When planting your tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinths and other spring-flowering bulbs, be sure to pick up a bag of oyster shells. These sharp-edged shells form an irritating barrier that burrowing rodents (squirrels, voles and moles) are reluctant to cross. This organic product will naturally break-down over the years, providing a slow release of calcium to enrich the soil.
